Talk #6: A Brief Introduction to Digital Forensics

Abstract

As digital devices increasingly embed themselves into our daily lives, they are becoming an increasingly rich source of evidentiary data. Whether it is used for criminal investigations or incident response, Digital Forensics is a growing field encompassing all sorts of new devices, tools, and techniques.
This talk will introduce you to the field of Digital Forensics, along with the practices and procedures followed during a digital forensic examination. It will also provide a glimpse into how Digital Forensics is practiced in a Law Enforcement environment and some of the additional challenges that presents.

Speaker Bio

Mitch is a Computer Forensic Examiner with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. He joined the RNC’s Computer Forensic Unit in April 2015, and has since gone on to complete over 200 forensic examinations of various digital devices, including cell phones, computers, laptops, and tablets. Prior to his foray into Digital Forensics he spent 10 years employed in the Information Technology field, working in industries such as Secure Credentialing and Biometric Identification. In addition to his Bachelor of Computer Science from Memorial University, Mitch has completed several Computer Forensic courses at the Canadian Police College, and holds several forensic tool certifications.
