Details

This event will take place on West side of the greater Cadet Area (never before used for a public event!). The map (Sprint spec) features some great fine and course terrain navigation, highly detailed scrub oak mapping, and a touch of developed area to wrassle with.

Full details and registration at: EventReg. You're welcome to RSVP here, but you must register at EventReg to actually register.

NEW! Mapper's/Course Planner's/Meet Director's Notes:
- Sorry, no pets allowed at this event.
- Bring your own water and snacks. We'll have use of restrooms in a nearby building.
- There is a bit of prickly pear cactus and some yucca, wear sturdy shoes that will protect your feet. Long pants, long sleeves, and covered ankles are strongly recommended.
- Lots of small boulders are mapped. No, I wouldn't put a control on one of them, but yes, they are generally helpful for navigation.
- The selection between the large tree and small tree symbol may feel a bit arbitrary. The mapper applied the "locally relative" principle in being deciduous.
- There's LOTS of scrub oak. It has been mapped to a very high level of detail. Many of the gaps between blobs of scrub oak on the map are mere weakness that you must push through. They are there and usable. The mapper has physically been through every one of them.

  • Pay attention to and respect the Out of Bounds areas (marked with purple cross-hatching on the map). We are not permitted to pass through or climb on any of the ropes course area elements (many look like phone poles with cables between them), the Inner Cadet Area (secured by the Black Fence), or any athletic fields.
    - It may get stormy as early as noon, so it might be a good idea to start as early as your schedule permits. Brush up on your lightning safety knowledge here. I'll try to open starts as early as 8am, if possible. I plan to add some lightning symbols to show buildings that are likely to be open and which should be usable for refuge in the case of lightning. USAFA has a "Giant Voice" system that reports proximity of lightning strikes. I recommend following its advice.
  • The ORANGE course (only) will have a QR code option. This will allow you to record and prove that you found each of the controls in order using your cell phone, and will post your total time to a webpage. Please contact me directly with any comments and feedback (both about how I implemented it and about how it works, what features you'd like to see, etc.). A big thank you to Mark O'Connell at New England Orienteering club for creating the PHP code behind the QR system. Please visit QRienteering to download and use the code for your events and NEOC's QR Code Orienteering page for more info.

Thank you!
