PHarness: Building an Agent Harness That Actually Knows Its Limits
This month's featured presentation comes from Lucas Ward, who's been building PHarness: a lightweight agent harness designed as an SDLC control plane.
The pitch is straightforward. Most agent frameworks get you to "model calls tool" pretty quickly. What they don't give you is structure around what happens next. Who approved this run? Can you replay it? Is there an audit trail? What stops the agent from doing something you didn't intend?
PHarness approaches those questions with a specific set of principles: small surface area, typed actions, policy enforced at the runtime layer, durable evidence on every run, and bounded autonomy. Chat is secondary. Runs, approvals, artifacts, and the audit log are primary.
The project is intentionally local-first today. It's also designed from the start to run cluster-native. The goal is a harness that grows with you without becoming the thing it was built to avoid: plugin sprawl, opaque shell execution, hidden permission bypasses, and agents shipping to production on their own.
If you're building with LLMs and you've started asking "how do I actually control this thing," Lucas's talk is worth your lunch hour.

What this session covers:
- What PHarness is and the problem it's designed to solve
- The philosophy behind typed actions and policy in the runtime
- Local-first architecture with a path to Kubernetes-native deployment
- What PHarness explicitly is not (and why that matters)
- Where it's headed and how to get involved
