EVENT DESCRIPTION
Humans claim superiority among species to reason and make choices. However, the brain is more an organ with which we “think” we think. David Ropeik, author and consultant on risk-perception psychology will discuss research on human cognition that established our “thinking” is a mix of thinking and feeling, all reasoning is “motivated”, and all perception ultimately subjective. David will cite his 1012 book “How Risky Is It, Really? Why our fears don’t always match the facts”.

David will have copies of his book "How Risky Is It, Really? " for purchase. He will be happy to sign your copy.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
David Ropeik is an author and consultant on the psychology of risk perception, risk communication, and risk management. He is author the book How Risky Is It, Really? Why Our Fears Don’t Always Match The Facts. Mr. Ropeik was the co-director and principal faculty member of the Harvard University professional education course, “The Risk Communication Challenge.” and he was an Instructor in the Harvard Extension School’s environmental management program. He was a television reporter in Boston from 1978 – 2000, where he twice won the DuPont Columbia Award, often referred to as the Pulitzer Prize of broadcast journalism, along several other national and regional awards. He has taught journalism at Boston University, Tufts University, MIT, and Northwestern University. GENERAL INFORMATION
Our (usually) First Wednesday Dialog series brings in outside speakers to share interesting topics related to Humanism -- kind of like Ted Talk. We socialize and enjoy refreshments until about 7:15, at which point the speakers presents for as long as they choose, usually until 8:00 or so. At this point we pass the mic around and have a group discussion about the topic. When the discussion wraps up, we continue with more refreshments and socializing until around 9:00 when all attendees are welcome to join our open steering committee meeting.

We take donations at the door to cover the cost of the meeting ($5 is suggested). Half of the donations (after we pay the rent) are given as an honorarium to the speaker with a $25 minimum. All regular attendees are encouraged to bring refreshments to share.

Note that we have a large mailing list outside of Meetup.com so the RSVP numbers are generally much lower than the actual attendance.
