For Memorial Day, let us explore the lower reaches of the Forest of Nisene Marks and, among other things, pay our respects to a fallen giant, The Advocate Tree.

Hike: 5-7 miles, partially based on attendee preferences, ~700’ TEG.

Difficulty: Although, technically, this is a “walk in the park”, please be prepared for something quite a bit more strenuous and rugged than a typical neighborhood stroll. The trail has short sections of steep uphill and downhill grade, with some single track sections over very uneven ground. There are also stream crossings — most with seasonal bridges, but you may wish to bring hiking poles just in case.

We depart from a modern shopping center, and travel back in time, first entering a riparian habitat with stands of reeds and clusters of thimble berries that we will assess for ripeness (it is still early). From there we will explore the deep redwood forest, including some of the last remaining old growth trees in the park, circling through Marcel's Forest and the Twisted Grove. Expect a few mountain bikes and other hikers on the weekend, but generally everyone is in such a good mood that it adds rather than detracts from the hike.
