Long before climate change and the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, there was Shakespeare and his theater. Hundreds of years on, Shakespeare Santa Cruz still proclaims his poetry and performs his plays within the Audrey Stanley Grove of DeLaveaga Park. They also put on a mean drag show! Discover the magic of this forest enclave, nestled against a golf course, like a riddle within a conundrum. Bring your mirth and wonder, as we explore this postage stamp of paradise, just a stone's throw from the Mystery Spot.
Expect a moderate 4-6 mile hike and ~700' elevation gain (farther if we decide to visit the Shakespeare stage area), with some narrow trails on steep, forested hillsides. DeLaveago provides a lovely, near-by hiking experience, that offers the chance to spot unique human phenotypes in an otherwise natural environment. Homo sapiens golphorensis and Homo sapiens frisbeegolphus co-exist in this unique ecosystem. We may spot individuals from these distinct populations and, using our iPhones and AI tools, identify them on iNaturalist.
