Join us for a peaceful sunset hike (4 miles, 725’) in the rolling hills of Cañada del Oro. Bring some warm clothes and a post-hike meal, and we will get cozy while our astronomer friends set up their various telescopes, binos, whirligigs and cosmic gizmos for a night of star gazing and space talk!

Longwall Canyon Hike: 4.2 Miles, 725’ TEG. Canyon Streams and hilltop views.

UPDATES:

  1. 4 Carpools: Peter, Amber, Shannon, & Teri will register their carpools with the Open Space Authority (OSA). Peter and Teri will depart from the Almaden Center around 4:30. If you’d like to carpool with them, text Peter to coordinate!
  2. Where: 6477 Almaden Expy, San Jose
  3. The OSA rep suggested that you park your cars in the Overflow parking lot (see photo!) which isn't too far up the road past the primary parking area. You will not have to move them after you finish hiking.
  4. An important note about lights in the parking area after dark. When you get back and have your post hike food break please be careful to minimize the light and direct it away from where the telescopes are set up. And be careful not to turn on headlights when pointed toward the telescopes.

Bring:
— Water and a convenient post-hike meal.
— Hiking pole for the canyon hike, stream crossing.
— Chair or cushion for sitting / resting.
— Flashlight. White lights should be covered (red) by SJAA prior to night viewing.
— Stories, cards, games? We will have about an hour of rest before stargazing.

“Gather with fellow space fans for an evening under the stars as we set up telescopes for up-close viewing of the night sky in all its splendor. You may even see a meteor or satellite passing overhead. Come join us for a star party that will leave you inspired by the beauty and science of astronomy.”
