We need to talk about Conscious AI. w/ Prof. Anil Seth
Details
Understanding the nature of consciousness is amongst humanity's most important questions. What is consciousness? Can we create conscious AI? Can we upload our consciousness to a machine? Answering these questions have a material impact on who we are as a species as well as our place in the universe.
The Conscious AI meetup brings together the world's leading thinkers exploring the boundaries of consciousness, awareness and sentience through the fields of Theory of Mind, Artificial Intelligence, Multi-agent systems, Virtual Environments, Neural Networks, Evolutionary Computing, Safety and Ethics, so that we can have a meaningful debate to approach answering these questions.
We are honoured to have Prof. Anil Seth as our inaugural speaker. Prof. Seth is perhaps the world's preeminent thinker on the subject of consciousness. Hosting this session is Calum Chace, globally recognised Philosopher and Author on the topic of AI and its impact on humanity.
Prof. Seth will talk about the "Prospects and pitfalls for Conscious AI"
"As AI continues to develop, it is natural to ask whether AI system can be not only intelligent, but also conscious. In this talk, I will first consider why some people think AI might develop consciousness, identifying some biases that might lead us astray. I’ll then ask what it would take for conscious AI to be a realistic prospect, pushing back against some standard assumptions such as ‘computational functionalism’. I will instead make the case for taking seriously the possibility that consciousness might depend on our nature as living organisms – a form of ‘biological naturalism’. I’ll end by exploring some ethical implications of AI that either actually is, or convincingly seems to be, conscious."
