Peace Amid Chaos

Details

There is a way to avoid both the suffering of being invested in life when it doesn't go our way and the suffering of disengaging from life to protect ourselves from disappointment. We can cultivate an orientation of caring deeply about a process and being unattached to its result. We can learn how to care deeply while being equanimous about whether or not things work out the way we want.

Uppekha, or equanimity in the ancient Pali language, is one of the 4 bramha viharas (also known as 'the four immeasurables') as taught by the historical Buddha.

Lovingkindness (metta), Compassion (karuna), Empathetic Joy (mudita) & Equanimity (uppekha). The bramha viharas are said to be the only 4 emotions left once clinging has been removed through full spiritual awakening.

Join our group of seekers who are exploring how to marry timeless wisdom with the knowledge and insights of the 21st century. We’ll look at equanimity from the perspective of traditional Buddhadharma, and also from the point of view of Integral metatheory. Along with the talk, we will also incorporate a short meditation practice and some discussion time.

This session will be lead by Christopher Lawley, who has been practicing and training in the universalist Namgyal lineage of Vajrayana Buddhism for close to 2 decades. Christopher is also steeped in Integral Theory and uses it to inform how he works with individuals and groups.
