Digital Twins are becoming an increasingly relevant engineering paradigm for pervasive systems such as smart cities. Centralised approaches to deliver DTs, such as Cloud-based ones, suffer of high-latency and high bandwidth consumption, as well as pose privacy risks to users. An Edge-based solution can overcome all these limitations.

Join us in this event, where Marco Picone and Stefano Mariani from Unimore propose to deploy Digital Twins of vehicles and road elements at the Edge, on top of a MEC infrastructure, as the basic bricks on top of which engineering efficient and performant solutions could be developed to address smart cities issues. For instance, mobility issues such as congested intersections, limited parking availability, and traffic overflow affect all major cities worldwide.

Marco Picone is a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He received the Ph.D. in Information Technology and the M.Sc. (cum Laude) in Computer Engineering from the University of Parma. He published several research papers in international journals/conferences and the main research interests include Internet of Things, Edge/Fog Computing and Digital Twins.

Stefano Mariani is Researcher at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. He has been involved in the EU FP7 Project SAPERE, in the EU H2020 Project CONNECARE, and is currently WP leader of the Italian MIUR PRIN Fluidware. His research interests include coordination models and languages, agent-oriented technologies, pervasive computing, self-organization mechanisms, and socio-technical systems.
