Valentines Day (and others) - Performative Gift Giving

Details
I have a personal peeve with performative gift giving - regardless of the occasion.
What is performative gift giving?
It's buying stuff for other people because there's a sense of obligation. If you *don't* get flowers, chocolates, a card, plan a fancy dinner (specific to Valentine's day) - do something that expresses your love and appreciation in a material show of extravagance - then you're a bad person in some way.
Let's talk about why this is an unhealthy socially conditioned pattern and how you might set healthy boundaries and expectations around these situations and potentially allow freedom from guilt; especially at a time when financial stability may be more rocky or uncertain.
