Politics has always mattered. Governments make decisions about justice, freedom, economics, education, family, war, and the common good. But has politics begun to mean something more to us?

For many people today, political beliefs are no longer simply opinions about how government should function. They have become deeply connected to identity, morality, community, and our vision of what is wrong with the world and how it can be made right. Political disagreements can therefore feel less like disagreements over policy and more like conflicts between competing religions.

At this Coffee & Conversations Meetup, we’ll explore an increasingly important question: Have we begun asking politics to provide things that people once looked to religion to provide—meaning, belonging, moral certainty, hope, and even salvation?
Together, we’ll discuss questions like:

• Why have political disagreements become so personal?
• Why do political beliefs increasingly function as part of our identity?
• What makes something a political belief versus a religious belief?
• Do both the political left and political right have their own versions of “orthodoxy,” “heresy,” heroes, villains, and visions of salvation?
• Why are people sometimes willing to end friendships or relationships over political disagreements?
• Has declining religious participation contributed to increased political polarization?
• Do political movements provide people with community, purpose, and meaning?
• Are our political opponents merely mistaken—or do we increasingly see them as morally bad people?
• Can politics actually solve the deepest problems of human beings?
• What happens when we expect government or political movements to give us meaning, justice, belonging, and hope?
• Can people with radically different political beliefs still share a common life together?
• What would Christianity say politics is for—and what would it say politics can never accomplish?

This conversation is not about deciding whether Democrats or Republicans are right. Instead, we’ll step behind particular political controversies and ask a deeper philosophical, sociological, and theological question: Why has politics become so important to our sense of who we are?

Whether you are conservative, progressive, moderate, politically homeless, religious, secular, skeptical, or simply curious, you are welcome.
Come ready to think, question, disagree respectfully, and enjoy a good conversation over coffee.
