Proposal for a Trip to Glacier National Park near Roger's Pass

Details

Please read this CAREFULLY! This is not a scheduled hike (yet).

I want to go to Glacier National Park, near Roger's Pass in September for two days of hiking. This is one of my favourite places for hiking in all of B.C. and I don't say that lightly. It is mind-numbingly, picture-perfect, drop-dead gorgeous.

The purpose of this notification is to find out if other people want to come with us.

I am willing to take up to 12 hike club members (besides myself and Pamela) up two trails there.

One day will be a moderate hike up the Great Glacier Trail (pictured above). This is 9.6 km return trip, with 220 m elevation gain.

The other day will be harder, but I haven't decided which trail to do yet. There are several fantastic trails to choose from, but you can expect at least 700-800 m elevation gain and 8 hours on the trail.

I intend to stay at Canyon Hot Springs, which is about a 30-minute drive from Glacier to relax after the hikes. It does indeed have hot springs there to soothe over-worked muscles and joints. They have a lodge, little cabins, big cabins and tenting spaces. There are other alternatives: camping at Glacier itself (cheapest option) or hotels in Revelstoke (which is another 30-minute drive the other way, so staying in Revelstoke would put you about an hour away from the trail heads).

I will NOT be arranging accommodation. Once the hike is official, I will post information on where I am staying and the times we will meet at the trail head. I will answer questions as best I'm able and give lots of free advice if you want it.

The purpose of this note is to find out who might be interested in going, and –THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT– if you are a working stiff who would prefer to go on a weekend, or someone who would rather go during the week. You are NOT making a commitment right now. You are just telling me that you are interested, and then I need you to make a comment saying if you would prefer a weekend or weekday trip.

The dates for the weekend hike would be September 6-7, or if I choose the weekday option, September 3-4.

Depending on how many people are interested, I will make this an official hike on Tuesday, July 1st. That's when the hike becomes real and you have to decide if you really want to go or not.

So, if you are INTERESTED, sign up for this event. Then POST a comment saying if you would prefer the weekend or the weekday. If enough people are interested I will post the actual hike next week with more details.

If you are new to the club and you can EASILY do Knox Mountain Apex route, then you can consider this trip. If you cannot do it easily, or don't know what that is, please do that before even thinking of signing up.
