ADRA TUNNEL HIKE. DEFINITELY SATURDAY .

Details

MY APOLOGIES FOR CHANGI G THE DAY EXPECTING VISITORS WHO ARE NOW NOT ARRIVING UNTIL NEXT WEEK

THIS EVENT IS THIS SATURDAY…IN TWO DAYS TIME!!!!!!!

This great hike and viewing was done the beginning of August and is some thing everyone should see.

Although the instructions below related to driving, we will park at the Smethurst lot on the rail trail and walk / hike the 2.5 + kms. to the upper parking lot and then take a trail to the tunnel.(all uphill on the service road )and return the same way. Not a race (lol).

All info about the tunnel is below. We will meet at the Smethurst parking lot on the KVR at 10am.

To access south entrance of Adra Tunnel on foot from the upper parking lot, is about 750 meters. The trail to Adra Tunnel has roots and rocks and is not accessible for all users, including those who require mobility scooters, wheelchairs or walkers.
Important reminders.
For those visiting Adra Tunnel, please be aware there is the potential of falling rock and debris, cold and damp air conditions, and varying surface conditions. Be prepared before you enter the tunnel. There is no cellular telephone service and no natural light inside the tunnel (your phone flashlight will not be sufficient).
Within the tunnel, two-way cyclist and pedestrian traffic is in effect. Please be aware and respectful of other users.

I am posting on a weekend so more of you will be able to see this outstanding tunnel. Total mileage 7.9 km and 445 m elevation. It’s an uphill grind but wheeeee coming back down 😊

Madeleine😊

PS…bring a flashlight with you especially for your footing, although there are high lights at the top of the tunnel. Built by lead engineer Andrew McCulloch and hundreds of workers, by hand in the 1913-15 era. Quite the feat. There are many books on this construction one of which I have (Myra’s Men).
