Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen

Details

Thanks to all who showed up yesterday for Leo Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich. I can honestly say that it was one of the best discussions of a book I remember to have had with this group. Thanks to Frank for leading the discussion and thanks to all for participating.

Again, we had a lot of suggestions for the next book to read. However, in a close tie by popular vote, Susanna Kaysen's memoir Girl, Interrupted from 1993 won out.

The book is, by far, the most recently published classic we have read, but I think it's fair to say that it remains renowned as such. Especially, due to the 1999 movie version starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, which has won the book much praise and assisted its neo-classic status.

Girl, Interrupted is Susanna Kayson's memoir of mental illness and her experience on the ward for teenage girls at McLean Hospital for psychiatric disorders.

You can read more about the book here. And listen to it here.

For other ressources on how to get a hold of classic books, please see the About us section on the front page of the group here.

We meet up on Saturday November 22nd at 4 pm. Unfortunately, Mélo Wine Bar is too busy to host us through October, November and December, so I’m trying to find a different location.

Please remember to bring your suggestion for the next classic book to read.

And please, as always, be mindful and respectful of each other, so that everyone feels respected and appreciated.

In the meantime happy reading/listening/watching or however you do it.
