Green Software in the context of AI

We work in an industry that has a large dependency on the power running the software we build.

The power spent running our code comes from the consumption of natural resources in some form.

As an engineer, it can be hard to figure out the best choices to limit your resource usage as much as possible.

Luckily, people like Anne Currie have taken up the mantle of trying to get the numbers straight and give us some areas to focus on when creating the many great solutions that are running our societies today.

Anne is a co-founder of the Green Software Foundation and has also co-written the O'Reilly book Building Green Software. CNUG has been lucky enough to invite her to this meetup in August, where she will join us on-screen to give us her take on the current challenges we as engineers face when trying to lower our carbon emissions as much as possible.

The second speaker is Bastien Bigué, a Data Engineer at ElectricityMaps mostly working on the grid modelling and methodology side of things. ElectricityMaps.com is a Danish startup delivery carbon data to Clever, Google and a lot of others.

Abstract:
The electricity that powers our software comes from a grid whose cleanliness changes by the hour: how much carbon it emits can shift dramatically depending on where and when it's generated. As software engineers, we rarely see this variability. At Electricity Maps, we turns heterogeneous data from hundreds of sources into a signal that shows exactly how clean the grid is, hour by hour. This talk looks at what that takes, and what it means for the AI workloads.
