A monthly gathering for meditation, science, and spiritual transformation
Cosmos is evolving. Beginning in January, our program will be more experiential, weaving together mindfulness practice, and heartfelt sharing. Together we’ll explore how our practice supports personal, societal, and global healing, and how it helps us build a beloved community.
Cosmos is a program of First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego.
And it’s also something more.
Cosmos is our home.
We ourselves are Cosmos, in the form of human beings. After 13.8 billion years of unbroken cosmic evolution, we are Cosmos becoming conscious of itself. As Carl Sagan said, “We are stardust studying the stars.”
In Cosmos we:

  • Explore the scientific story of the universe—its birth, evolution, and possible future.
  • Contemplate what it means to be “cosmic beings” with a role in that unfolding story.
  • Practice mindfulness and meditation so we can experience our lives more fully in and as Cosmos.
  • Share how our practice is changing us and shaping the ways we show up for and serve the world.
  • Celebrate with chants, songs, and music

This is a spiritual journey of transformed consciousness—bringing together the Story of the Universe and mindfulness meditation. Our aim is to experience a shift in identity: from separate individuals to beings who feel ourselves as expressions of a living, evolving universe. We believe this inner transformation is essential for the healing and wellbeing of our world.
To support this, Cosmos is:

  • Adding regular meditation so we can directly experience the shifts in awareness invited by our new understanding of the universe.
  • Deepening our community sharing, focusing on how we’re using these practices to enrich our lives and contribute to a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world.

It is genuinely thrilling to discover who and what we really are—and we intend to cultivate and share that joy as we practice together. Neither prior meditation experience nor past involvement in the previous Cosmos series is required. All are welcome!
