COTA: Central Oregon Trail Alliance

We’re going to enjoy some hot chili and corn bread between 5:00 and 5:30 so come early with an appetite. At 5:30, we will continue the maintenance work that we started last week on this portion of Afternoon Delight.

All abilities and levels of experience are welcome to join!

Details:
Our main focus is cleaning and reshaping existing drains that haven’t been worked on in several years. In addition there will be some sand removal from recent rain storms and a small amount of brushing.

Where:
We will meet on Conklin Rd. There is a parking lot pull off on the right just past the main Tyler's Traverse parking area. Look for the event sign just past where the pavement ends. That will be marked as a google pin.
IMPORTANT: We may carpool a group to the upper portion of the trail work, which is 3/4 of a mile south.

When:
Thursday September 10, 2026
5:00-7:30pm

What to expect:
Expect to work with great people who have a similar passion for riding mountain bikes, hiking, trail running and being in the forest.
After a brief safety talk, we’ll hike or car pool up to the trail and start work.
We will use flat shovels to remove material from the drains and reshape the edges and lead-ins using the same implements.
After the shovel work we will naturalize the areas we’ve worked.
Sand removal would also be done with flat shovels in a way as to NOT disturb or dig into the tread.
We’ll have snacks, soft drinks and beer for when we’re done.

What To Bring:

• Warm clothes (layers)
• Sunscreen/chapstick
• Water
• Snacks
• Sturdy, close toed shoes
• Backpack to carry your things
• Long pants
• Work gloves
• Eye protection (glasses, sunglasses - we will have some as well)

All tools and hard helmets will be provided.

Join Us for a Ride & Learn with COTA's Trail Crew!
This month, instead of our regular chapter meeting, we’re hosting a special Ride & Learn event with members of COTA’s trail crew and Crew Leaders.

We’ll be riding Swampy Lakes East/West with several stops along the way to explore completed maintenance projects and discuss upcoming needs. Along the ride, we’ll cover how we evaluate trail conditions and the techniques we use to keep our trails in top shape.

This is a no-drop ride, meaning no one will be left behind. However, we do ask that you only join us if you’re confident and comfortable riding this route.

Post-ride social: Stick around at the trailhead afterward for refreshments—including non-alcoholic options and drinks generously donated by Deschutes Brewery.

What to bring:

• Helmet (required)
• Basic tools and spares in case of mechanical issues
• NO EBIKES WILL BE ALLOWED

Come join us for an evening of fun, building new trail at Barnes Butte in Prineville!

All abilities and levels experience are welcome to join!

Details:
We will be constructing brand new trail by hand on the North side of Barnes Butte. There will be work for people of all skills level and abilities.

Where:
We will be meeting at the Barnes Butte trailhead. There is a new road so pass Barnes Butte Elementary and continue on NE Combs Flat road and then take your first right onto the gravel road into the trailhead parking lot.

When:
We will be meeting at the trailhead at 1p. If you can, please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early so we can start right at 1p. We will sign waivers and do our tailgate safety talk. After that we will bike/drive up Baby Burma road (City/BLM approved). At the top we will do a demonstration on new trail building and then begin work. Wrapping up at 4:45p to return to the trailhead by 5p.

What to expect:
Plan on moving a lot of dirt and having FUN! Be prepared for warm weather. Cold refreshments will be provided at the end.

• Sturdy, close toed shoes

• Eye protection (glasses, sunglasses - we will have some as well)
