Make Art With Biology And Robots!

Details
Join Counter Culture Labs in the virtual lab on Sunday, March 7th to learn how to make art with living microbes and robots! This will be a 2-hour class with hands-on elements that you can do from home, and remote elements that you can watch happen live in the lab based on your inputs.
Livestream link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDj6NXU2pvo&feature=youtu.be
This class will be streamed live on YouTube and publicly available for free. However, you must sign up to have your art printed* and receive class handouts. The cost of the class is $10, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds - message us and we will work it out. All proceeds will support the work of Counter Culture Labs and BioArtBot.
Background:
Did you know that you can paint with microbes to make LIVING ART? Microbes can produce vivid colors, and, if you treat them carefully, will grow into any shape you can draw.
If you can't be in the lab to work with microbes safely, you can still make bio-art with the help of the CCL robot. With BioArtBot you can design your art from your computer and send it to us for printing with living ink.
What we will do:
- Before the class, visit bioartbot.org and submit a drawing. It can be anything you want!
- On the day of the class, we'll use BioArtBot to generate instructions for how to recreate your art that our robot can understand
- Prepare our engineered microbes for growing into your art
- Play with robot programming by sending it simple commands, then we'll set it to print your bio-art
- The art will grow over two days and you'll be emailed a photo of your bio-art as a keepsake
All of these steps will have discussion and Q&A with the live chat.
You will learn:
- How to make petri plate bio-art
- The basics of growing microbes in a bio lab
- How to operate a lab robot
- How software, robots, and biology can work together to express yourself
*A note about printing art: We will only be able to print so many pieces during the class, so if we have many attendees yours may be printed at a later time. Rest assured, if you pay for the class, you will get a keepsake photo of your bio-art.
