Abstract:
One Definition to Rule Them All
In C++, a program can compile and link successfully yet still be ill-formed. A common cause is a violation of the One Definition Rule (ODR), which governs when declarations and definitions in different translation units denote the same entity.
Using practical examples, this talk explores the relationship between linkage and the ODR, including various pitfalls. Some violations result in clear linker errors; others go unnoticed and surface only after optimization - or following an apparently unrelated code change.
We’ll examine why that happens and how to prevent these issues in real-world C++ projects.
