C++ vs Linux : GPUISP in libcamera

The presentation topic is libcamera GPUISP, a pure Software Image Signal Processor. Modern camera hardware often relies on proprietary firmware, leaving open-source developers with raw, unprocessed Bayer data. This talk explores libcamera’s evolution from a multi-threaded CPU-based SoftISP to its high-performance GPU-accelerated implementation with OpenGL. We also discuss the specific c++ development choices that allow libcamera to handle complex media graphs and performance-critical real-time image processing across diverse hardware architectures.

Our speaker Bryan O’Donoghue is a linux kernel & c++ engineer, serving as the upstream maintainer for the Qualcomm CAMSS and USB type-C drivers, as well as a reviewer for video encoders and embedded controller drivers. Bryan works as an independent embedded software consultant at Linaro and is an active contributor to the libcamera project, where he focuses on developing open-source software to overcome the limitations of proprietary hardware image signal processing.
