Lorsque vient le temps d'écrire un programme en C++, nous réfléchissons habituellement aux forces et aux faiblesses de notre ordinateur, de la même façon que l'on peut réfléchir aux structures de données, et probablement aux fonctionnalités du langage que l'on souhaite exploiter (ou que l'on souhaite éviter), puis nous écrivons le code en conséquence.

Certains seront peut-être surpris d'apprendre que le langage C++ est spéficié selon les termes d'une machine abstraite qui a ses propres caractéristiques. Si c'est effectivement une surprise pour vous, alors vous serez certainement intéressé d'en apprendre davantage à propos de cette machine. Elle existe depuis longtemps et elle influence notre façon de programmer de même que la façon que le langage a été conçu et continue de l'être.

L'objectif de cette présentation est d'offrir une vue d'ensemble de la machine abstraite du langage C++ et de comment elle affecte la façon que nous programmons et la façon que le langage évolue. Ce sera probablement très intéressant pour un public de niveau intermédiaire qui souhaite en apprendre davantage sur les fondements abstraits du langage.

La rencontre aura lieu dans la salle PK-R220 du pavillon Président Kennedy de l'UQAM. De la pizza sera servie sur place, gracieuseté de notre commanditaire Druide Informatique inc. La présentation commencera vers 19h, sera d'une durée d'environ 50 minutes et sera donnée en anglais par Patrice Roy.

Patrice Roy enseigne en informatique depuis 1998 et il est membre de la délégation canadienne au ISO C++ Standards Committee. Il participe également au ISO Programming Language Vulnerabilities.

When writing a C++ program, we tend to think of the strengths and weaknesses of our computer, just as we think of our algorithms, data structures, and probably of language features we want to use (or we want to avoid), and we code accordingly.

To some, it might be surprising to learn that C++ is actually specified in terms of an abstract machine, with its own characteristics. If this is indeed a surprise for you, then you might be interested in knowing more about this machine. It's been there for a long time, and it influences the way we program as well as the way the language was, and is.

The aim of this talk is to provide a practical overview of what the C++ abstract machine is, how it affects the way we program and how it affects language design itself. It will probably most interesting to intermediate audiences who would like a closer look to some of the abstract underpinnings of the language.

The meetup will be held in the room PK-R220 of the Président Kennedy building of the UQAM. Pizza will be served, thanks to our sponsor Druide Informatique inc. The talk will start at 7 pm, will last about 50 minutes and will be given in English by Patrice Roy.

Patrice Roy teaches computer science since 1998 and he is a member of the canadian delegation to the ISO C++ Standards Committee. He's also involved in the ISO Programming Language Vulnerabilities.
