Book Description
Ian Robertson's book The Winner Effect explores how success changes the brain's chemistry, making people more focused, confident, and aggressive, which increases their chances of winning again. It explains the biological and psychological mechanisms behind winning and how repeated success can create a self-reinforcing cycle, but also warns about the risks of overconfidence and addictive behaviors that come with too much winning.
The question of winning underpins almost every part of our lives. Who wins is the factor that shapes our lives more completely than anything else. Winning is a drive as powerful as sex.
The winner inside can be raised up or crushed by subtle unconsciously mediated effects related to gender, race and age that we are completely unaware of.
Discussion Topics
- Are people born into winning?
- Is winning a matter of chance and circumstance?
- What does power do to us?
- Why do we want to win so badly - what is the attraction of power?
- Does winning has a downside?
- Does simply being in the more powerful role distort some people's behaviour?
