Creative Code Toronto meetup

Details

Join us for a Toronto meetup of creative coders! In addition to a meetup, this time we are also featuring talks from three local creative coders:

  1. Introduction to Creative Code by Jordanne Chan

Curious about creative coding? Discover the tools and resources to kickstart your journey! From beginner-friendly platforms to more advanced techniques, there's a world of digital creativity waiting for you. From the foundations of Scratch to the intricacies of microcontrollers and static site generation, learn all about ways code is being used creatively. Let's explore the vibrant intersection of tech and art, and discover a world filled with possibilities. Learn what's out there, how to get started, and why it's all SO cool!

Jordanne Chan is a creative technologist, generative artist and STEAM educator who specializes in guiding both children and adults in workshops across Toronto's maker communities. Embracing the Geocities spirit, she passionately combines disciplines to ignite interest in creative coding, digital fabrication, and more.

  1. Going Down the Pipe by Varun Vachhar

Lines or paths are usually among the first elements you draw when starting with creative coding. You can combine multiple lines to create shapes or use lines to represent a system. However, they often remain as separate entities.

While working on one of my pieces, "Infinite Pipes," I discovered the power of combining paths into a cohesive system. This was a pivotal point in my creative coding journey. Instead of treating paths as discrete elements, combining them into a system opened up a lot of exciting possibilities.

In this talk, I'll walk through my explorations of path-based systems. Along the way, I'll share concepts and techniques that you can incorporate into your own generative work.

Varun Vachhar is a DX Engineer at Chromatic and a contributor to Storybook. He specialize in component-driven development, design systems and generative art.

  1. Animation Principles for Motion Graphics by Dave Pagurek

For decades, animators have been teaching the 12 Principles of Animation, a framework to help animators learn how to make convincing character motion. While intended for character animation, the 12 Principles can help us with the motion of more abstract graphical elements too, and avoid our motion graphics becoming "Powerpointy."

In this talk, we'll go through the 12 principles from the perspective of motion graphics sketching with live-coded examples.

*Dave Pagurek is a graphics developer at Butter, a creative-code-powered video and motion graphics editor, and is a developer for WebGL mode in p5.js.*

What is creative code? Creative coding refers to anything with an artistic component that uses code as a medium. We welcome artists who use code (for visuals, audio, poetry, or whatever else), designers, animators, toolmakers, researchers, or just enjoyers and people looking to learn more!

Location: 225 Sumach Street, in the building's party room. Enter the lobby, come up to the 4th floor, and message @dave on our Discord to summon us to let you in!
