At the first Creative Coding event of 2018 we'll focus on generative πŸ€–πŸŽ¨ art! We'll have two awesome talks by Alex Berke and David Schmudde!

β”‚ ▢️ Building Interactive Art on the Web to Educate a Mass Audience
β”‚ by 🌟 Alex Berke (https://twitter.com/AlexandraBerke)

Mathematics is about more than numbers. This talk is about a digital coloring book
(http://coloring-book.co) about math that uses both programming and generative art to lead the reader through mathematical theory via interactive animations and mathematical designs. The talk will discuss the programming and tools used to produce the illustrations and the larger project, as well as the deeper mathematical concepts behind the body of work.

More about the project:

http://coloring-book.co is a free resource to make math more accessible. It is both digital and available on paper. The digital copy brings the concepts and illustrations to life in interactive animations.

It has already been read/viewed by tens of thousands of people online, and is being tested by educators ranging from elementary school tutors to college math professors.

Built with open source software, this resource will remain free.

πŸ“š Alex bio: Alex has specialized in architecting and building technology from scratch that scales. Her work has ranged from creating voter protection bots to programming intelligent phone networks in Erlang. She currently works within the social impact arm of Google Search; her team researches and develops ways to better serve those searching for civic or educational information.

She is also a math nerd - she began creating the interactive coloring book about math with javascript as a resident artist at Pioneer Works.

β”‚ ▢️ Sound, Motion, Notation: The Work of Channa Horwitz
β”‚ by 🌟 David Schmudde (https://twitter.com/dschmudde)

Channa Horwitz worked on her β€œSonakinatography” series from 1968 until 2012. The pieces are a prescient expression of a hidden order that transcends artistic medium and forms the world around us. My presentation will investigate her algorithmic process by running code and placing the output in a broader historical context across the domains of art, gaming, and computation. I’ll also touch on the concepts of literate computing in computational notebooks using Nextjournal.

πŸ“šDavid's Bio: D. SchmΓΌdde is an artist and computer programmer who has been building experiences and creating stories for broad audiences for the last 15 years. His work has been broadcast on outlets such as the Dish Network, AT&T U-Verse, and Direct TV, screened at venues like the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, and performed in institutions such as the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and the Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow.

His latest endeavor, the interactive documentary β€œJack and the Machine,” promises to recontextualize the story of the personal computer and the future of our digital society. It is available to preview here: http://www.jackandthemachine.com.
