Workshop Natural Clay PCB's
Details
How can we build electronics differently? In this 2-day workshop, artists Stefanie Wuschitz and Patrícia J. Reis invite participants to explore Feminist Hardware by developing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) with natural clay and other ethically sourced materials. It is an open secret that the hardware inside our smart devices is not only made of plastics but also relies on conflict minerals such as tungsten, tin, tantalum, silver, and gold. Technology, therefore, is far from neutral. In this workshop, we explore ethical approaches to hardware, to imagine and develop renewable practices that benefit both nature and humans.
Over the course of two days, participants will model PCBs from natural clay, paint circuits with recycled silver, and fire them. On the final day, they will solder electronic components and test their circuits, transforming them into interactive microcontroller boards capable of controlling digital and analogue sensors as inputs, as well as speakers, LEDs, and motors as outputs.
Artists Wuschitz and Reis bring years of experience at the intersection of art, technology, and feminist practice. As founding members of the feminist hackerspace Mz* Baltazar’s Laboratory in Vienna, they have long been exploring how to reimagine hardware through ethical, feminist, and ecological perspectives. Their work combines hands-on experimentation with critical reflection, challenging the extractive and gendered structures of mainstream technology. They are uniquely positioned to guide participants in developing electronic circuits from clay and recycled silver, while opening up a wider conversation about care, sustainability, and more-than-human collaboration.
The emphasis is not only on making but also on the process itself: engaging with the body and senses, slowing down, and embracing failure as part of learning. This practice opens up space for feminist and ethical approaches to hardware that resonate with permacomputing principles and Zoöp’s commitment to materiality, situatedness, and more-than-human care.
This workshop is part of Ground, and the outcomes of the workshop will be presented at the Ground Exhibition from 8 to 22 November.
