Classworks Theatre: Flying by the Seat of Our Pants!
Details
How does an arts organisation endure and flourish?
Cambridge-based Classworks Theatre (http://www.classworkscostumes.co.uk/Classworks-Theatre.html) has been in existence since 1983. The temptation is to say that it has "survived" since then, but in fact at times it has thrived beyond all expectations, at times it has indeed struggled, and at other times it has coasted along quite steadily running community and youth groups at the same time as touring productions up and down the country.
One thing arts practitioners learn quite quickly is that you have to be adaptable and resilient, and you have to be quick on your feet (and in your mind). As funding opportunities appear and vanish, you have to be realistic about what you can achieve. Along with disappointments and frustrations there are unexpected successes and inspiring collaborations.

About 15 years ago, the company premiered an Edward Bond play around the same time it launched another touring play that ended up being performed abroad long after its predicted run.
Founder and Artistic Director Jenny Culank will relate some of Classworks' history, explain the company's philosophy, and tell us how a sideline in costume hire has proved vital to the organisation's continuing existence.
