Solar eclipse photography 2026

On August 12th we're heading to Hoek van Holland for something rare: a partial solar eclipse, with over 90% of the sun covered at its peak.

We'll meet up before it starts so everyone can get set, talk through settings, and explore ideas together. Then we'll shoot as a group as the light slowly shifts into that late-evening eclipse glow. The total duration will be about 2 hours.

With nothing but the open sea on the horizon, we've got a clear, unobstructed view - hopefully some perfect conditions to really focus on the sky and the changing light.

Bring your gear, any (ND-)filters you've got, and a bit of patience. The hosts will be there to assist you with your photography and questions.

Gear info

1. Lens
   If you want to shoot the eclipse head-on, the subject will be tiny. A large zoom lens would be optimal. Anything below 300mm will be quite small. Of course if you want to take other types of photos, having a lens with a large aperture will help with the low light conditions of the eclipse.

2. Filter
   Any certified solar eclipse filter will do. Officially you'll need a ND100000 filter to shoot into direct sunlight - otherwise you might risk destroying your camera's sensor. Note: I will bring an A4 of solar filter film with some tape and scissors. We can make some DIY filters with that, but use at your own risk!

3. Tripod
   Any sturdy tripod that you don't mind getting sandy will do. We will be standing there for about 2 hours, so not having to hold it and aligning for the perfect shot is nice!

4. Extra batteries, jacket, water & snacks
   We'll be outside for a while, come prepared!
