Writing & Publishing

Lake Moon Literary is a welcoming gathering for flash fiction, micro-memoir, micro-biography, and short personal stories. We’ll talk, write, read our work aloud, and share thoughtful feedback as we discover how a few vivid details, natural conversation, and small changes can turn everyday moments into memorable pieces.

The class is about noticing what matters in a single scene, trusting your readers to follow you, and shaping your work for possible publication in a literary journal. Later, we’ll celebrate with a book signing.

Session 1: Intro – How to get started. Where and when to do it. What to write about.
Basic exercises, demo, and examples. Homework writing is assigned.
Session 2: Review excerpts of homework. Feedback, critique, and how to edit. Guest
speaker, local published author.
Session 3: Review excerpts of edited story. Feedback and critique. How to get it
finished. Advanced editing.
Session 4: Read and polish your story. Prepare for publishing. Guest speaker: published
author and editor. Next steps as a writer.

With near four decades of writing and publishing experience, Rebecca Tombaugh is an award-winning investigative reporter, writer, former managing editor of The Kansan and owner/publisher of The Johnson County Business Ledger magazine. She has also published numerous short stories, poems, and four books, and served as president of the Kansas City Press Association. Twice, she gained national attention when she was taken to court for refusing to turn over sources and documents to the Wyandotte County government and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
