🇬🇧 Meet the artist, sip wine, enjoy great conversation and of course experte beautiful artwork at the opening of our new exhibition featuring paintings by Clyde Yoshida!

About the Artist:
I studied life drawing, painting, and art history at El Camino Community College and San Diego State University where I earned my bachelor’s degree in fine art and also my teaching credential. Hit by the budget cuts in education in the 1980s, my plan to teach art was diverted to teaching math. Luckily, my first teaching assignment was at San Diego’s School of Creative and Performing Arts. I taught Advanced Placement Art History in addition to teaching algebra.

In 1995 I attended Harvard University and earned my master’s degree in education. There, I focused on the important role creativity plays in our development and in our learning. My creative life is tied to finding universal truth and enlightenment.

I find calm and beauty in chaos and connection to the universe in all of my creative expressions: music, painting, photography. My love of nature solidifies my belief that quenching our thirst for knowledge and promoting peace is a matter of channeling the universe with creative powers of mind and simply paying attention. Presenting my work is my way of expressing my inner thoughts to the world.

I’ve previously exhibited my work in San Diego at the Ray at Night art scene and the 10th Avenue Arts Center. My series of abstracted flower paintings, called Answers from the Universe, was inspired by the idea of a symbiosis between nature and humankind.

Travel has also been an important part of my life. I taught English in Japan, studied Spanish in Madrid, and have had wonderful adventures in Egypt, India, and South America. Living in Portugal since the summer of 2022 has been a gold mine of inspiration with new friendships, the charms of historic architecture, and the beautiful setting beside the Sado River and Arrábida Peninsula. I must also thank my new friends for their encouragement and creative energy, most of which stems from their own metamorphosis as they settle in this new home country. The entirety of the new location and nurturing relationships have contributed to the renaissance happening in my creative brain. This is what I hope you’ll observe in the paintings included in the Color of the Sado.

Although I constantly pursue something unique and innovative in my work, I am heavily influenced by ethnic arts, and the ingenious works of Degas, Picasso, Rousseau, Gauguin, Monet, and Klee, to name a few. My awareness of masterworks and all things intriguing and beautiful are the puzzle pieces that influence me, but how the pieces fit together with line, color, lights, and darks fit together and emerge as a unique representation still perplexes me. Something in my mind takes over, resulting in a painting or song. It’s just something that my subconscious self needs to do to process the world and share.
