What we’re about

Greetings!

Are you an individual residing in Hamburg who has faced racism firsthand? Are you interested in exploring critical whiteness theory to better understand and deconstruct systems of oppression? If so, we invite you to join our reading group tailored specifically for individuals like you.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and supportive space where those who have experienced racism can come together to discuss their personal encounters while also engaging with the theoretical framework of critical whiteness studies. By blending personal experiences with academic discourse, we aim to foster deep understanding and meaningful dialogue around issues of race, power, and privilege in German society.

Objectives:

Facilitate Dialogue: We seek to facilitate open and honest discussions where participants can share their personal experiences of racism in a supportive environment.

Engage with Theory: Through selected readings and discussions, we will explore key concepts and theories within critical whiteness studies, providing valuable insights into the structures and mechanisms of racial oppression.

Promote Empowerment: By understanding the complexities of whiteness and racism, we hope to empower participants to critically engage with societal norms and effect positive change within their communities.

Who Should Join:

This reading group is specifically designed for individuals in Hamburg who have encountered racism and are interested in deepening their understanding of critical whiteness theory. In the initial phase, we aim to create a space exclusively for non-white individuals to build a sense of community and trust. Once the group gathers a critical mass, we plan to open it to individuals from all racial backgrounds, as we believe diverse perspectives enrich our discussions. However, for the time being, we kindly request that only non-white individuals join to ensure that the group is a supportive environment for those who have experienced racism.

Format:

Our sessions will typically involve discussing assigned readings, reflecting on personal experiences, and engaging in group activities aimed at deepening our understanding of critical whiteness theory. We value active participation and encourage all members to contribute to the conversation.

How to Join:

If you're interested in joining our reading group, please connect for more details. We're excited to embark on this journey with you and look forward to building a supportive community committed to learning, growth, and social change.

Together, let's explore the intersections of race, power, and privilege, and work towards creating a more equitable and inclusive society.

Warm regards!
