The Two-Party System: Is It Still Serving America?

For most of the nation’s history, American politics has been dominated by two major political parties. Supporters of the two-party system often argue that it promotes stability and helps organize political debate, while others believe it can limit voter choice or make it harder for new ideas and perspectives to gain traction.

At this meeting, we’ll explore the role of the two-party system in American politics and consider how it shapes elections, governance, and public discourse.

We’ll ask questions such as:

• What experiences have most shaped the way you think about the two-party system?
• Have there been moments when the two-party system felt helpful, clarifying, or stabilizing to you? What made it feel that way?
• Have there been times when the two-party system felt limiting, frustrating, or out of step with what you wanted from politics? What stood out to you?
• When you think about possible changes to the current system, what concerns, hopes, or past experiences influence what you would want to preserve—or do differently?

This will be an opportunity to explore different perspectives on the two-party system and consider how it affects political representation, public debate, and the functioning of American democracy

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
