Market Solutions to Climate Change

Details

Most of the approaches to mitigating the negative impact of climate change involve some sort of restriction on how resources are used and managed -- with an apparent assumption that capitalism will inherently lead to exploitation of natural resources. Let’s put that assumption under the microscope, asking such questions as:

  • Have we seen any instances where competition, rather than government mandate, drove innovation toward lower emissions and reduced impact on the environment? (If so, what are they?)
  • Does trusting the free market to address climate change equate to trusting consumers to demand corporations to behave more responsibly?
  • Some have said consumers “vote” with their wallets. How does this type of “voting” compare to voting at the polls when it comes to setting the direction of a government or culture?
