Elections depend not only on counting votes, but also on people having enough confidence in the process to accept the results. Yet people across the political spectrum may have very different ideas about what makes an election trustworthy, fair, or legitimate.

At this meeting, we’ll explore where our confidence—or lack of confidence—in elections comes from and what experiences have shaped it.

We’ll ask questions such as:

• When you think about an election you trusted, what helped you feel confident that the process worked as it should?
• Have you ever encountered something that made you question how fair or reliable an election was? What concerned you?
• When people you respect have very different levels of trust in an election than you do, how do you make sense of that difference?
• What would you personally need to see or know to have confidence in an election won by a candidate you strongly opposed?

This will be an opportunity to explore what shapes our trust in elections and better understand why people can look at the same election process and come away with very different levels of confidence.

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
