As the new administration gets ready to take office with immigration an important part of the agenda, let’s discuss an important aspect that tends to get a lot less attention: our LEGAL immigration system.

Many Americans feel that it’s important to have a system that makes it easy to come here legally, often arguing that this is a fundamental American value and part of what made this country what it is, is in our economic interest, or that it would discourage illegal immigration. On the other hand many are focused on keeping tight control of who comes in and how many people come in, with concerns regarding economic impacts and integration of new immigrants into the existing society and culture.

Currently there are a few legal pathways to immigrate to the US - through work, family ties, as a refugee, or through the lottery program, in addition to temporary guest worker visas. However, many of these pathways are complex and can involve long wait times, in some cases taking many years or even decades to resolve. There are those who argue that these difficulties discourage the sort of legal immigration that we want, while others believe that these are necessary controls to make sure that immigration benefits America, as others still want to see more (or different) restrictions put in place.

In our first discussion of the year, we will take a closer look at the process of legal immigration. Here are a few topics we will explore:

  • Are Americans generally aware of the intricacies of the legal immigration system?
  • Have you or someone you know had first-hand experience with the process? Has that affected your views?
  • What are the most important aspects you want to see in the legal immigration system? How well do you think the current system reflects that?
  • How, if at all, do you think our current legal immigration system impacts illegal immigration?
  • If you think change is needed, what specific reforms would you propose?
