What Does it Mean to Be Free in America Today?
“Freedom” is one of the most cherished American ideals—invoked in our founding documents, echoed in political speeches, and claimed across the ideological spectrum. But what does it really mean to be free in the United States today?
At this meeting, we’ll explore how different people define freedom, how those definitions have changed over time, and what role freedom should play in shaping our future as a nation.
We’ll ask questions such as:
- What does it mean to be free in America today to you?
- How has our understanding of freedom changed since the country was founded?
- Where do you believe an individual’s freedom should end to make room for the rights of others?
- Do you think freedom is more about having choices (“freedom to”) or protection (“freedom from”)?
- How does financial security affect your sense of personal freedom?
This will be an opportunity to reflect on a core American value and hear how others across the political spectrum interpret the meaning of freedom in their own lives.
Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
