We often make a distinction between equity and equality: Whereas equality implies equal rights and opportunities, equity is more about fairness and to many means adjusting conditions to account for perceived imbalances. While most of us admit to wanting to live in an equitable society, in a country as diverse as ours, we see very little agreement on what that would look like or how to achieve it. Often we don’t even agree that certain imbalances exist or should be adjusted for.
Whether it’s removing barriers or building ladders, equity is often discussed as providing access, especially through government policies, yet many of us are concerned that initiatives that support some may end up blocking others.
Join us as we explore the nuances of equity and how it presents itself to us:
- What other words come to mind when describing equity?
- Do you consider equity a priority in government decision making? Everyday decision making?
- How can we assess whether something is equitable or not?
- Is it possible to create a world that is both equitable and equal?
