Schools routinely make decisions about subjects that families may understand differently, and questions involving gender and sexuality can bring several responsibilities into tension. Schools may be considering the needs and privacy of individual students, parents' roles in their children's lives, age-appropriate instruction, the treatment of classmates, staff responsibilities, and community standards—all at the same time.

At this meeting, we'll explore what people want schools to do when these responsibilities conflict. Rather than trying to settle larger disagreements about gender or sexuality, we'll focus on the practical question of how schools should function when students, parents, educators, and communities hold different beliefs.

Questions:

  1. When issues involving gender or sexuality arise at school, what do you most want schools to get right?

  2. What role should parents have in decisions involving their own children? Are there circumstances where a student's privacy should also matter?

  3. How should schools decide what is age-appropriate to discuss or teach?

  4. What should schools do when respecting one student's needs or beliefs appears to conflict with another student's or family's needs or beliefs?

  5. Which decisions should be made by individual families, teachers, schools, school boards, or state government? Why?

  6. What would it look like for a school to handle these disagreements in a way that people with very different beliefs could regard as fair, even if no one gets everything they want?

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
