Are There Limits to Tolerance in America?

In a country built on the promise of freedom and pluralism, tolerance is a core ideal. But many Americans are beginning to ask: Where should we draw the line—and is there such a thing as too much tolerance? Just as we champion acceptance, we’re also grappling with rising intolerance, both subtle and overt, on all sides of the political spectrum.
At this meeting, we’ll explore how people define tolerance and intolerance, where limits might lie, and how those boundaries are shifting in today’s social and political climate.

We’ll ask:

  • What does “tolerance” mean to you, and how has your definition changed over time?
  • How do you respond to views or behaviors you believe are harmful—should they be tolerated?
  • Is there a moral or social cost to tolerating intolerance?
  • Where do you draw the line between holding firm to your values and remaining open-minded?
  • Who, if anyone, should decide what society tolerates—and how should that be enforced?

This will be an opportunity to explore diverse perspectives and reflect on the role of tolerance in American life today.

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
