Schools play a central role in shaping young minds, but questions are growing about how much politics influence what students are taught. Some see classrooms as neutral spaces for learning, while others worry that political beliefs or ideologies may be shaping curriculum, teaching methods, or school culture.

At this meeting, we’ll explore concerns and perspectives around politicization and indoctrination in schools, and consider how education can best serve students, parents, and society.

We’ll ask questions such as:

  • What do you think it means when people say schools are becoming “politicized” or “indoctrinating”?
  • What subjects or topics come to mind when you think about politicization in schools, and why those in particular?
  • How do you think schools can teach important but sensitive topics without alienating parents or students?
  • What do you think schools should—and should not—teach to prepare students to live in a democratic society?
  • In what ways have you seen politics influence what is taught, or how it is taught, in classrooms today?
  • How should schools balance teaching facts, critical thinking, and values without crossing into political influence?
  • Who do you think should play the strongest role in shaping what students learn—parents, educators, or policymakers?

This will be an opportunity to hear diverse viewpoints and engage in a respectful conversation about the role schools should play in preparing students and shaping society.

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
