How does it feel to live, work, and build relationships in a place where many people assume political agreement?

Living in a city known for strong civic values and outspoken views can be affirming, uncomfortable, or complicated—sometimes all at once. People are often met with assumptions about their political views in everyday settings: at work, with neighbors, among friends, or even in casual conversations. This discussion invites participants to reflect on how those assumptions shape daily life, relationships, and a sense of belonging in Portland.

Rather than debating issues or trying to persuade one another, this conversation focuses on lived experience. We’ll explore how people across the political spectrum navigate agreement, difference, and silence—and what helps (or hinders) honest connection in a community where shared assumptions are common but not universal.

Discussion Questions

  1. When have you noticed assumptions about your political views being made in Portland, and how did you respond?
  2. In what spaces do you feel most comfortable expressing your views, and where do you tend to stay quiet?
  3. How do unspoken expectations or shared assumptions affect relationships at work, in neighborhoods, or socially?
  4. What strategies have you used to maintain relationships across differences—or to avoid conflict altogether?
  5. What helps you feel connected and respected in a city of strong opinions?
