Privacy and Surveillance in the Digital Age

New technologies have changed the ways information can be collected, stored, and used, raising new questions about privacy, surveillance, and constitutional protections. Tools such as location tracking, geofencing, facial recognition, and data collection have become part of modern policing, marketing, and everyday technology use. At the same time, these technologies have sparked ongoing debate about personal freedom, public safety, convenience, and government or corporate power.
In this conversation, we’ll explore how people think about privacy and the meaning of Fourth Amendment protections in a rapidly changing digital world.
Discussion Questions:

  • When have you become more aware of how much information about your movements, habits, or behavior is being collected through technology?
  • What experiences have shaped the way you think about balancing privacy, convenience, and public safety?
  • How do you personally decide what kinds of digital tracking or data collection feel acceptable, helpful, invasive, or uncomfortable?
  • In what situations, if any, do you think governments or companies should have access to location-based or personal data? What influences your thinking?
  • How has technology changed your expectations about privacy compared to earlier in your life?
  • What do you think the Fourth Amendment should mean in an age of smartphones, apps, cloud storage, and constant connectivity?

This will be an opportunity to explore different perspectives on privacy, technology, constitutional rights, and trust in institutions in a respectful and curious conversation.

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
