How Do We Vote?

When we vote, how do we decide which candidate, policy, or position deserves our support?

Join us for a conversation that goes beyond what we vote for or against, to explore how we make those decisions—the values, moral instincts, experiences, and priorities that shape our political choices.

Moral Foundations Theory offers one way of understanding why thoughtful, caring people can look at the same issue and reach very different conclusions. Some participants may have heard Lisa’s recent introduction to the theory, but no previous knowledge is needed.

We’ll begin with a brief, accessible overview of Moral Foundations Theory. Then we’ll explore questions such as:

• Which moral values most strongly influence how we make political decisions?
• Why do certain arguments, candidates, or issues feel especially important to us?
• What moral concerns might guide people who vote differently?
• Can understanding those foundations help us listen with greater curiosity, even when we still disagree?

This It will be a guided conversation and an opportunity to better understand ourselves, one another, and the moral reasoning beneath our political choices.
