Workshop Description

Everyday we make an important trade: our data for our time. By depositing our personal information into data warehouses we enable facilities such as easy identification and payment, allowing us to partake in the wonders of modern society.

The security of these warehouses data warehouses is not something we typically concern ourselves with. Suppose that such a warehouse is ransacked and our data dispersed into the public space, permanently, and for all to access. What does this mean for us?

Data breaches have become increasingly common in recent years and through public discussion and client engagement, it is clear that the full implications of these events is not commonly understood.

In this presentation we will:

• shed light on the significance of data breaches in today’s world.

• look at examples of high profile breaches and data sets available.

• give you an opportunity to look yourself up in our leaked credentials database and examine your old passwords.

• share ways that we, as organisations and individuals, can be protected from what is now an almost inevitable occurrence.

We hope that individuals will come away with an understanding of their exposure to data breaches and the skills needed to manage associated risks.
