MAIN TOPIC ABSTRACT
Night of Music and Linux
This month we'll be using the whole night to be a "show and tell" of several of the various music production and performance tools that Linux has to offer. We'll have a chance to stay away from slide-ware (for the most part) and you'll see and hear first-hand what a guitar/mic, a midi controller and a laptop with Ubuntu Studio is capable of...and we'll just be scratching the surface. For Basic Concepts, we'll cover the basics of the Jack audio system as it is the foundation of most of the audio tools that Linux has to offer. We'll then demo a few of the live performance audio software tools including Sooper Looper and a couple of guitar amp emulators as well as show some of the very helpful Jack configuration tools that are available to manage the complexity. For the Main Topic portion, we'll transition to the audio recording and production tools. We'll briefly touch on Audacity and Linux Multimedia Studio and then go through a real recording project using Ardour, Linux's most powerful hard disk recording solution. Finally, we'll look at mastering an audio production with Jamin. While we won't go deep or overly technical in any one piece of software, I'll hopefully be able to spark your imagination and demonstrate the power of open source software while having some fun and jammin' along the way.
