TOPIC ABSTRACT
Quantum GIS (qGIS)
I'll be discussing the Quantum GIS open-source Geographic/Geospatial Information System (qgis.org), applications, and extension through the creation of plug-ins using PyQt, a Python binding of the cross-platform GUI toolkit Qt. Qgis is powerful tool that lets us visualize, question, analyze, interpret, and understand data in new ways that can reveal relationships, patterns, and trends. A blog post on setting up the development environment for Qgis under Ubuntu can be found at https://wrbishop.com

TOPIC ABSTRACT
Using Solr and NLP
The customers in the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense that ISS serve have a big data challenge. The sheer volume of data being produced, and ultimately consumed by large enterprise systems has grown exponentially in a short amount of time. Providing analysts the ability to interpret meaning, and act on time-critical information is a top priority for ISS. In this talk, we will explore our journey into building a search and discovery system for our customers that combines a variety of open source components - Apache Solr, OpenNLP, UIMA, Tika, Jackrabbit, and Hadoop to enable analysts to "Shrink the Haystack" into actionable information.
