Monthly Meeting: Turning Waste into Wearables
Details
Join us for a fascinating look at the intersection of art, activism, and environmental stewardship with Rebekah Fraser, the Founding Director of Trash to Fashion.
We live in a world of "fast fashion" and disposability, where we often don't give a second thought to the items we discard. But what happens to our environment when "away" isn't actually away? How can we shift our mindset from seeing trash as a burden to seeing it as a creative resource?
Rebekah, a New Haven-based artist and climate reporter, has been answering these questions since 2007 by transforming found objects—from discarded credit cards and phone chargers to window screens—into stunning wearable art. She will lead us in a discussion about the "trashion" movement and how upcycling can help combat the global crisis of textile waste.
- How can creative reuse change our relationship with consumption?
- What are the local impacts of textile waste in Connecticut?
- Can art be a primary tool for environmental advocacy?
Rebekah Fraser is a Yale alumna and an environmental advocate whose work has been featured in galleries and fashion shows across the region. As the leader of Trash to Fashion, she works to raise awareness about sustainability through workshops and public art, proving that high style and ethical living can go hand-in-hand.
We will meet for coffee and conversation at 6:30 PM followed by Rebekah's talk at 7:00 PM.
