A tour of Australia's legal landscape as it impacts tech businesses

Details

Come for a twisty personalised tour through the laneways and highways of Australia's legislative landscape in areas that maybe you've never thought of before, but it's never too late to start. We'll then travel further afield and take a quick look at global laws that can impact Australian businesses.

We'll look at:

  • Privacy law
  • Data protection law
  • Law enforcement access to data
  • Taxation obligations
  • Data retention obligations
  • Breach reporting
  • Q&A

These laws are important so you don't run afoul of them by accident, but also so you can be intentional about the data you record, the vendors you use and how you validate customer data. Even if you're not responsible for compliance yourself, understanding the business needs will help make your day to day work more effective.

This month's meetup will be run by Nicola Nye, Chief of Staff at Fastmail. She notes she is not a lawyer, but she's spent plenty of time and money talking to lawyers and now knows enough to be annoying to anyone who says loyalty schemes are a good idea.

We will be running a hybrid event: come along in person to Fastmail's offices (must be up to date with your vaccinations to enter), or follow along on Zoom. (Link will be published on meetup on the day)
