Data ethics IRL: keeping algorithmic bias out of your data products
Details
Venue: Stile Education are hosting. Level 5, 128 Exhibition St, Melbourne CBD
Talk: Algorithms have seamlessly integrated into our modern lives. They control our access to information, and the way that we allocate resources. While these technologies hold the capacity to do tremendous good for humans, they can also exacerbate systemic oppression and existing biases. Vivek will be delving into the ML Lifecycle and discuss how biases can seep into the development process. He will also share ways to mitigate these risks, with concrete examples of how Multitudes does this in practice when building their data products.
Bio: Vivek Katial is data practitioner who is passionate about social impact. He is on the founding team at Multitudes where a big part of his role is considering how to measure data on people and how it can influence and change behaviour. Outside of that he also co-founded an Australian NGO, The Good Data Institute (GDI), which builds data capabilities for the charity sector. Vivek also spent time at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab doing a fellowship exploring the use of ML for exoplanet detection and is also finishing up a PhD in Optimisation via Quantum Computing.
