Culinary Historians of Chicago studies the history of food and drink in human cultures. Why we procure, prepare and serve the food we do has cultural, sociological, geographical, financial and political influences. We encourage participation from all walks of life: from academics to home cooks, chefs to grill masters, farmers to heirloom gardeners, food scientists to students. Our programs, and those of our sister organization Chicago Foodways Roundtable, are supported by research, fieldwork and scholarship, though geared to an informed popular audience. We welcome everyone to gather at our table to share food, drink and their life's culinary experiences.

Come join us as the one and only Meathead makes a return visit to our group to continue his mission of busting BBQ and grilling myths, and throw in some savory history as well. Meathead (yes, that’s his real name) gave our members a real ribbing several years ago with tales from his first book, the New York Times best-seller, Meathead, The Science of Great Barbecue and Grilling..
Today, he’s here to share new methods from his latest book, The Meathead Method, which is an ode to outdoor cookery. Food legend Alton Brown wrote the foreword and called it “The only book on outdoor cookery you’ll ever need.” And you’ll all get a chance to grill Meathead when we open the program to chat questions.
BIO: A food icon in his own right, Meathead is one of only 40 living BBQ Hall of Famers. His website, AmazingRibs.com, is considered a leading resource for BBQ and grilling information. Meathead is also a former columnist for the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Post, and AOL.

From 1850 – 1950, the area of DuPage County, located just 10 miles west of Chicago, was home to farming families and small towns. Acre by Acre: Our Farming Heritage will explore how settlers transformed the land into a thriving farming community and delve into the rich history of farming in the western suburbs. Despite facing challenges, these pioneering families supported themselves through subsistence farming before transitioning to commercial farming, contributing to Illinois’ agricultural legacy. The farmers of DuPage experienced the impact of mechanized farming equipment, which revolutionized the agriculture industry in Elmhurst and throughout Illinois. Furthermore, DuPage County’s location along extensive railway lines allowed Elmhurst to participate in the bustling trade and commerce of agricultural products through Chicago.
In addition to photographs, videos, and many historic farm tools, visitors can take part in several interactive elements, from a children’s farmers market to trying out traditional farm chores. An exhibit the entire family can enjoy, Acre by Acre: Our Farming Heritage offers a unique look at how Illinois influenced the agricultural industry over the decades.
Curator of Exhibits, Sarah Cox, who will guide us through this exhibit, said. “We hope the exhibit inspires visitors to learn about where their own food comes from, support local farmers by visiting one of the many farmers markets in the area, and possibly even try their hand at growing their own produce this summer!”
